Free Turkey!!!

You Turkey

Yesterday around 6:00pm, to add to the Chaos of rush-hour and free ice cream in Huntington New York, a run-away turkey was cornered by Suffolk County Police in the abandoned store front of 315 Main Street. The feathered fugitive was finally apprehended after a bit of a cat and mouse chase that began down on Woodbury Road. The Foul seemed to be, by my guess, an actual wild turkey and not an escapee from a poultry farm-Anybody feel like a Turkey? I say this because it makes a perfect visual match to the photos of wild turkeys online. They are actually indigenous to North America and very prevalent in the North East and may have been either a native to the pastures of Long Island or transported from upstate somehow. TURKEY INFO

Free Ice Cream!!!

BEn and Jerrys

The Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream store in Huntington New York participated in the Global Free Cone Day yesterday as the socially- minded Ice cream maker celebrated it’s 30th anniversary. At one point, the line of grateful participants stretched nearly to the corner of Green Street as the town was infused with the spirit of peace, love and free ice cream cones. The Ice cream gentile giant only asked for small donations to benefit under privileged children. I took a walk down Main Street saw that it was true; the entire town of Huntington New York was caught in a Swirl Wind of ice cream cones. Ben&Jerry’s Website

Spring on Main Street

Bradford Pear Trees

The beautiful Bradford Pear trees are in full bloom this week on main Street in Huntington NY. This is one of my most favorite times of the year when we are gifted with such transient beauty. The sun hitting the blossoms in late afternoon is reminiscent of cotton bolls or snow. Bradford pear trees actually produce pears but they’re just very small and usually go unnoticed or unrecognized as fruit. This is a good time to get a head start on gardening or throwing down some grass seed to jump start the lawn. For All Your Gardening Needs CLICK HERE.

New Bank Opens on Main St in Huntington

Bank

Not much of a shocking head line these days. The latest one to join the fun is called Community National Bank. Besides the brand new building on Main Street, they have a few branches in the area, one being in Garden City, and another on Jericho Turnpike at Woodbury Road. They’re not really running at full steam yet but in a week or two they plan on having a grand opening party to showcase what they offer “Banking 7 Days a Week” and “On Line Banking” being just part of the plan. Everyone is welcome. More and more banks seem to be extending their hours of operation to meet the needs of their clientele; the expression”Keeping Banker’s Hours” is becoming dated.More Info on Banks in Huntington

Cup Cakes!!!

Cupcake

I just got back from the coolest new place in town-It’s called the CupCake Gourmet and it’s located at the parking lot by the back entrance of Dunkin’ Donuts as your about to walk down the alley toward Wall Street. The store was conceived and created by the owner Amy who has plans to make the place into a great town hangout. Rivaling the big guns of Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts, they serve coffee, tea, lattes, and cappuccinos with tables and chairs creating a cozy hang space. No time to bake for birthdays? Let the CupCake Gourmet do the work for you. They have a wide variety of flavors from Cookies and Cream, to Malted Milk Balls and something called Red Velvet a smooth red colored cake with a creamy white icing and sprinkles-Yum! I think the plain ol’ Chocolate is my favorite, so come down and find out which ones you like. Their hours are a little sketchy right now ’till things normalize into a routine but try and see if you can catch them.

Huntington New York has an Ice Cream Melt Down

Lincoln

It seems that Huntington New York isn’t immune to the economic recession; Cold Stone Creamery and Wolfies being one of the latest victims. I never got a chance to really try Cold Stone; maybe the one down on 110 will stay there for a while. That was a surprise, I thought they where doing great. Cold Stone always seemed packed on the weekends. This town has had “dueling Ice cream stores” through out the years; at one time we had about 6 of these shops all competing. Now, I guess the days of spending 10 dollars on Ice Cream are over.

Army Recruiting Station in Huntington Long Island Shuts Down

The Army

It has been recently noted that the recruitment office for the US Army in the heart of Huntington Village is no longer in business. Exact details or reasoning have not been provided but it is speculated that the office might relocate to Huntington Station, a less affluent part of Huntington, NY. This comes as no surprise as the military has struggled to meet its goals and have been involved in several cases where recruiters have lied or misled potential enlistees.

Huntington Village is no stranger to the presence of armed establishments. During a stroll in Huntington many years ago, one would find a gun shop where Max Steakhouse is now, and an old armed forces recruitment station on Main Street around the Bank of America and the Protestant Church. The latest office to be closed on Main Street near the Dragon Gate Restaurant at Green Street was only opened after the attack of September 11 in New York City and Washington DC.

Although this location is gone, there are still several other offices available where individuals can find literature and information about joining the armed forces. The main source for finding an office near you is the Go Army website which is managed by the United States Armed Forces. CitiDexLI has a list of recruiting offices on Long Island, which is in the process of being updated.

Happy Birth-Day Mr. Lincoln.

Lincoln

If you may have noticed, I feel it my duty to explain why the flags come out on the streets every now and then, I think because when I was younger I sometimes had no idea why the flags would be out on certain days. Well today is Lincoln’s birthday the 16th president of the United States and we celebrate across the country by flying and displaying the flag. Huntington’s very own Walt Whitman, another character that I’ve become aware of and grew fond of over the years, was a contemporary of Lincoln. In fact one of his most famous poems,”Oh Captain My Captain” was a metaphorical poem written for the slain President, killed just after he saw the end of the Civil War and managed to maintain the union of these states. Au revoir Papier.

Papier Stationary

This was one of my favorite shops in town. It always made me feel good to stop in for birthday cards or Christmas stuff. Lion in the Sun is now the main card store, though if you don’t see what you like, remember that Book Revue is always a good place for cards, journals, and calenders.
