TAXI!!!

Taxi

Like the ad says, take your tastebuds for a ride! Huntington New York has a new eatery located at 217 New York Avenue. It’s called Taxi’s Grille and it serves good old fashioned Burgers, Hot Dogs, Philly Cheese Steak Sandwiches, French Fries, Onion Rings, even Sausage and Peppers - Oh! They also do the salad thing. Try a salad; start with your choice of greens; romaine, mixed greens, or baby spinach, and then ad what ever you want to it like beets, broccoli, carrots, celery, tomatoes, mushrooms, cucumbers and more all served with your choice of dressing. They have Balsamic Vinaigrette, French, Italian, Blue Cheese, Ceasar, among some of the most popular. Yes, this is the place that was further South on New York Avenue a few years back and I’m happy to see they found a new home. So when it’s lunch time in Huntington New York and you want to hit a place that serves both the healthy and the good traditional American fast food, think Taxi’s Grille.

Tea Shop Closing

Tea and Tiques

I has been noted that Tea & Tiques, the tea/antique shop in Huntington New York is closing after about four years of serving quality teas, fresh scones, home made muffins, and traditional tea sandwiches on china with an English Chintz motif. Located on New York Avenue in the hart of Huntington Village, the sign in the window says ‘Everything Must Go!” It’s really a shame, I’m looking at their menu on line and it looks so good; crumpets, fresh fruit, chicken salad with walnuts and dried cranberries. Tea Sandwiches ran the gamut from Goat Cheese and Basil Pesto to Fluffernutter and Nutella, a mixture of delicious and fun; how did this not work? I feel like I discovered this place just when it was too late

Long Island Violin Shop

Violin Shop

There’s a new Violin Shop opening on Elm Street in Huntington New York, right in between Dezyns Jewelery Store and JT Carrington’s Bar. The Long Island Violin Shop will be carrying everything from Violins, Violas, Cellos, Basses, and Electric Instruments, plus will offer Repair Services, Student Rentals, Accessories, Sheet Music and more! There still is a lot of work to be done to the place but in no time, I’m sure they’ll be up and running. This has the potential to be a mecca for the classical and folk music enthusiasts of Long Island. How Cool!! This will be the kind of shop that makes Huntington New York a charming unique place on Long Island’s North Shore. If anyone wants to contact them in this yet early stage, the telephone number on the sign in the window is 631- 427 - 3569 and they will soon be listed on the CitidexLI. directory.

Coo Coo for Cocofe!

chocolate

I just got back from Cocofe, that beautiful new casual, elegant, chocolate themed cafe at 273 Main Street in Huntington New York. The menu has sections for Dark Chocolate and Milk Chocolate Drinks both hot and cold. The Espresso list includes the usual- but better than usual- americanos, cappuccinos and mochas of course, and all the prices seem to be in the Starbucks range -not too bad considering the atmosphere, decor and real ceramic cups. All the featured chocolate is the hand crafted work of Azure Chocolate in Centerport New York. There’s even a limited vegetarian menu of soups, salads, pasta and then comes the Fondue!!! I feel like Gene Wilder must be back in the kitchen, or Juliette Binoche is going to come out and take my order - HA HA !!. I think this place has the potential to change our lives; there’s a movie to be made here somewhere.   Sally’s Cocofe

Another Closing

Antiques

It has been recently noted that the Gerard Street Antique and Design shop located at 7 Gerard Street in Huntington New York has closed. The building is across the street from Mac’s Steakhouse and still seems to have the appearance of it’s original intention as a barn or storage building despite its brand new glass door entrance. Though the old structure was revamped for the 21 Century to begin it’s new life as a high end retail shop, it’s interesting to see that there still is a vestigial hoist assembly way up toward the gable on the building’s east face as a charming reminder of a time gone by. The other end of the building is covered in a beautiful thick coat of ivy that looks like it has been growing for some time. It would be nice to see this building used for something; I hope they don’t just tear it down.

red restaurant renovation

RedRestaurant

Today on the Second of July 2008, while walking the streets of Huntington New York, I noticed that red restaurant, a very prominent foodie destination in town located at 417 New York Avenue was not only closed but being completely renovated. The good news is they’re not  moving;  they’re just beautifying their store front.  I called and got an answering machine that very optimistically invited us to join them for their July 4th Celebration. From the looks of the outside I feel as if some construction will be going on there for some time but maybe they’re still on schedule for the Fourth.

Mare Luna Restaurant

MareLuna

It looks like there’s a new Italian Restaurant called Mare Luna in Huntington New York opening in the former location of the Happy Daes ice cream parlor. I wonder how many Italian Restaurants this town can support. We already have Osteria da Nino, Guido’s, Mimo’s, Almarco Grill, Pomodorino, Mangiamo, Tutto Pazzo, 34 New Street,  Noma, Bravo Nader, Piccolo’s, SalD’s and then of course there are the Pizzerias that cook pretty good- Rosa’s, JoAnne’s Gourmet Pizza, Southdown Kitchen, Di Raimo’s, Junior’s, and even Renaissance has gourmet pizza and Joanina Restaurant. So I hope there’s enough hungry people for them all; I have to get in there to try it. I think a good dish of tortellini with a ragu sauce is a good way to see what you’re dealing with. You get a chance to really taste their gravy and if they can’t get that right -Fughedabaudit! Italian Restaurants

Chicory Flowers

Chicory

They seem to be everywhere - I’m sure you noticed them; they are the beautiful sky blue blossoms of the chicory plant that grow on the side of the road and even through the cracks of the side walk. Though some consider them to be pervasive weeds, they’re actually quite a beneficial herb. Not being native to the Americas they were brought over by European settlers either deliberately or inadvertently in bed stuffings or animal feed. Every part of the chicory plant is edible and its leaves are still often used in salads of the “field greens” type. When hard times hit France during the Napoleon years, chicory roots were roasted and brewed as a coffee substitute. This practice spread to the French colonies and to this day, coffee with a chicory infusion is quite popular in New Orleans. I just love the look and color of the profuse blossoms and I make sure every year I have a healthy amount of it in my garden. They’re very easy to care for; they thrive on neglect. May Fair

Its a carnival!

It’s that time of year again folks- The Huntington Y.M.C.A 16th annual Carnival has returned to town!!! It’s located at 16 Main Street near the village green area. You can’t miss it -it usually lights up that whole corner by Park Avenue. The fair will run from May 21-26 and admission is $10. It seems to have all the same rides as before; I see everything I was afraid to go on last year. I hope the rain is done for a while. This carnival is the work of the Newton family-Newton Shows Company
